As a result of researching her family tree,
Jean M. Bingham decided to find out more about her father’s brother who it was
believed died at Gallipoli during the Great War. This yearning for information about her uncle
William Benjamin Payne has led indirectly to the writing of this book of poems.
‘Beacons
of Remembrance’ evokes a whole range of feelings. One is immediately impressed
by Jean Bingham’s extensive knowledge of the Great War. Her poetry draws one in
to an understanding of the suffering and the thoughts of the soldiers who were
locked into this terrible conflict. Her
writing style is fluid, easy to read and comprehensible. This beautifully crafted work with its extensive and well-selected photographs
and drawings is a wonderful testament not only to her uncle but also to all
those who died in the Great War.
The
book has original poetry of great depth and should be viewed as a modern
classic. It is a truly masterful work. For anyone who has an interest in the Great War, this book should be
counted amongst their collection.
It
is without doubt the best poetry book released into the public arena for a very
long time. We would heartily recommend it to all those who share a deeply felt
passion about those who fought, suffered and died in the Great War.
