‘The European Powers in the First World War’, is an all-encompassing single volume of the First World War. Spencer Tucker the editor has drawn together in this one volume 91 of the best minds from within the American Academic History Community. Published in 1996 the book contains 600 references to the War.

For people who have a reasonably sound knowledge of the Great War this book may be somewhat limited in its content, but it will give them with a reliable source of information.  For those who are embarking on examinations or involved in a study course covering this period it will be a valuable learning aid.

As a reference work the book breaks down in the following ways. It runs alphabetically and provides information covering various topics such as Generals, Admirals, Politicians, Monarchs, Countries, Campaigns, Battlefields, Regiments, Armour and shipping to name just a few.

The editor, Spencer Tucker has introduced a refreshing, non-European view of the Great War. Readers may at times become a little irked at the use of American English but this concern does not diminish from an excellent encyclopaedia.

To conclude, this well written Volume can only enhance the reader’s study and general interest in World War One. To have this book on a bookshelf can only be of benefit.
