Map of the Ypres Salient and Houthulst Forest
The map dates from approximately June 1917 and covers the front from the sea, past Ypres and down to Armentières. It is 10 feet by 5 feet (3.28 by 1.64 metres) and it made up from tiles cut from maps of different styles, pasted onto a linen backing to allow folding.
Around the map is a very large arc, divided into two coloured scales. Centred near the Houlthust Forest (NE of Ypres), there are two locations marked that are coloured coded to match the two scales.
It is speculated that the map shows the site of two very large calibre guns and their associated observation point.
The size of the map causes a number of problems. At the normal resolution used in the Mapping The Front series, 300 dpi, a single file would be far too large for almost any software to open. It is therefore presented in several forms, full resolution tiles, a reduced version and a version reduced even more. The reduced versions allow inspection to see how it all fits together but full detail is only available from the individual tiles. The key map shows the arrangement of the tiles and their filenames.
Approximately sorted by title. There are no clear series of maps available here so sorting of the maps is somewhat ad-hoc.
NB. The column headed "Approx British grid square" shows the coverage of the German map approximated to the British grid system. It does not imply that the whole of the same British grid square is covered. This column is included simply to indicate location.
