The theme for this talk covers the war in the air

The renowned historian Peter Hart will give a presentation called "Up the Arras: The RFC and the Battle of Arras, 1917".

Meeting at the Sobraon Barracks on Burton Road the doors are open from 18.30. Free and ample car parking is available on-site. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available along with a bar for those who would partake in something a little stronger.

Describing the presentation Peter writes,

The legend of Bloody April still runs deep. Brave young British pilots of the Royal Flying Corps, with just a few hours training, being sent up to face the Red Baron – Manfred von Richthofen and his gang of merciless killers - the ‘Flying Circus’. Outnumbered, lacking even basic flying skills, outgunned and flying totally obsolescent aircraft; they went to their deaths due to the stupidity and intransigence of their commanders. They died like, the men on the ground, due to the blind commitment of Generals to the doctrine of the offensive at any cost.  All nonsense of course…

But why were so many young lives sacrificed in the skies above Arras?
The real reason was the requirement for photographic reconnaissance & artillery observation. The talk plays tribute to the heroism of men flying knowingly to their deaths in totally outclassed aircraft – sacrificing themselves to save the lives of thousands of infantrymen when they went over the top at Arras.

So if you have an interest in the 1914/18 conflict please come along and join a likeminded group.
