I am very sad to have to pass on news of the death of Dr Paddy Griffith. Paddy died of a heart attack on 24 June. He was a highly original military historian, author of numerous studies, including Battle Tactics of the Western Front, one of the best books ever written on the British Army in the First World War. He was an also an innovative wargamer, a genial host, and a good friend. He took me under his wing when I joined Sandhurst as a junior lecturer, and I will forever be grateful for his many kindnesses and his immensely stimulating company. An appreciation of Paddy's life and work will appear on the Cente for First World War Studies website in due course.

Paddy Griffith was one of the most brilliant military historians of his generation, an original and stimulating thinker, a doughty defender of his discipline against the ignorant and narrow-minded, a warm-hearted and generous friend and an inspiration to others. Our thoughts are with Genevieve and his son Robert.
