In July 2011 the Western Front Association, United States Branch, offers a truly unique excursion with a comprehensive two-week visit to all the major battlefields, museums, and memorials of the First World War's Italian Front.
This is the locale of the greatest mountain warfare ever, including one of the most misunderstood battles in history: Caporetto. Other major stops include the Carso Plateau, site of eleven Italian offensives, a cable car visit to the mountain top trenches above Cortina, the battlefields surrounding Rovereto and Lake Garde, the forts, artillery positions and memorials of the Altipiani and Asiago Plateaus, Bassano del Grappa andthe nearby bastion of Monte Grappa, and the 1918 line along the Piave River.
The deeds of notable warriors like Erwin Rommel and Ace Francesco Baracca will be discussed where they actually happened. A literary dimension of the tour will feature walks in the steps of authors Ernest Hemingway, Vera Brittain, Giuseppe Ungaretti, and Rudyard Kipling.
Fine food and many cultural activities supplement the battlefield touring. The trip concludes with two days in Venice, Queen City of the Adriatic and one of the world's greatest treasures.
The Group already has one member of the WFA from the UK with them, and they would welcome other participants from this side of the Atlantic to join them or to meet up with them whilst there.
