Man Accused Of Defacing Memorial

border_regimentJohn M Cameron, Chairman of the Scotland South Branch of the WFA, alerts us to the continued problem of the desecration of war memorials in different ways:

A man accused of defacing a war memorial just hours before an Armistice Day service, has been remanded in custody by the Sheriff at Dumfries.

David Baillie, 21, of Sandyknowe Crescent, Kirkconnel, appeared in private before Sheriff George Jamieson.

He was on a petition alleging that on November 11 at Main Street in Kirkconnel he painted offensive slogans using white paint - IRA, PIRA and War Criminals on and in the vicinity of the memorial with intent to cause distress and offence to members of the public attending the service.

He also faced other charges of smashing a window of premises in Greystone avenue last month and in nearby Kirkland Drive on November 10 attempting to pervert the course of justice by running away from police when being informed he was going to be detained.

No plea was made and the case was continued.
