Remembrance Sunday - Kranji Military Cemetery Singapore 2010

kranji-military-cemetery-singapore-200WFA Member Brian Smith writes from Singapore:

On Sunday morning at 07.30 am the Remembrance Ceremony here in Singapore was held at Kranji Military Cemetery in which thanks to you and the WFA, I took an active part laying the wreath which you had supplied earlier for this occasion.

The ceremony was extremely well attended despite the early start and as with all of these occasions carried out with precision and dignity.

The laying of the wreaths being lead by the British High Commissioner and followed by numerous representatives of Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth countries, Military Service personnel and various veteran associations.

Whilst I cannot be certain, I am reasonably sure that this is the first time the WFA have been represented at Kranji since its opening in 1976. Although Singapore saw only minor action in the form of a mutiny in 1915 and cannot be described as being part of the Western Front, the 64 service men buried there do form part of the overall losses of the Great War.

I have attached a photograph down loaded from a free Internet site. It is not one of me as it proved extremely difficult for my wife to get a good view during the Ceremony. However I found this one which clearly shows the WFA's wreath on the extreme right and I feel it is quite poignant.

Should you wish to use any of my comments of this picture in Stand To or the Bulletin, I would be delighted and hope that our readers would also find it interesting. Maybe it might encourage those on holiday in this part of the world to go to Kranji, as I feel a visit there, whilst in Singapore, is well worth while.

Thanking you once more for this opportunity to represent the WFA, a matter I hope to repeat subject to your approval.
