After being educated at Cheltenham, he passed through Sandhurst and was gazetted to the 2nd Battalion Middlesex regiment in October 1913. After service in the UK and Malta, he was sent to France on 4 November 1914, receiving his baptism of fire 12 days later.
On 9 January 1915, Robert was shot and killed by a sniper whilst in the trenches at Neuve Chapelle. He was 20 years old and is now buried in Rue du Bacquerot No.1 Military cemetery at Laventie.
