18 January OS Ernest Speight

From Cononley, Ernest was 24 years old when he was lost at sea when the HMT Gambri, which was engaged in minesweeping duties, struck a mine near the Royal Sovereign Light Vessel, 11 miles off Eastbourne, on 18 January 1918. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
