10 March Spr Robert Winterbottom

Of Briercliffe Road, Burnley, Lancashire. Formerly of the ASC, Spr Winterbottom worked at Clifton Colliery in civilian life and was a Special Reservist. An attendee of St.Andrew's Church, he was an ex-pupil of the associated school. He was killed in action (rifle shot to the head) on 10 March 1915 whilst repeatedly returning into ‘no-man's land' to collect wounded soldiers - an act for which he was to be posthumously Mentioned in Dispatches. Robert was 25 years of age when he died and has no known grave, being commemorated on Le Touret Memorial.
