Pvt William J Ryan, 5th Marine Regiment USMC.
Born at Ft Wayne in 1889, William enlisted into the US Marine Corps in April 1917 and, after training at Parris Island, he was allotted to the 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Division. A participant in the actions at Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel and the Argonne, he served in the Army of occupation on the Rhine after the armistice before being sent back to the USA. Whilst awaiting discharge, he was killed in Chicago on 11 March 1920 and is now buried in his birthplace - Ft Wayne.
