Part of the 2nd company, Josef, born in December 1889, was from Happing, Bavaria and was a theological student in civilian life. A holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class, Josef was killed during the bombardment on his positions in the vicinity of Roclincourt immediately prior to the assault made by the 51st Highland Division. He had served at the front since February 1915 and had taken part in many bitter actions including actions at Neuville St Vaast in May 1915 (where his battalion had suffered the loss of 14 officers and 1413 other ranks), the ‘Labyrinthe' and the Somme. Josef is now at rest in the Kameradengrab at the VdK cemetery at St.Laurent Blangy.
