From Margarethenthann (a small rural village near Elsendorf), Bavaria, 39 year old Josef had seen service in Belgium, Russia and Serbia where he was seriously wounded. He succumbed to his injuries in a military hospital in Weimar, Germany where he died on 30 April 30 1916. Exact place of burial (either Weimar or Margarethenthann) is unknown.
