Born at Greensburg on 13 November 1894, Joseph enlisted into the regular army on 16 April 1917. After only a few weeks training at Douglas, Arizona, he was sent overseas in June 1917 and saw service around Sommerville, Toul, Cantigny . He was wounded in action on 4 May near Cantigny, and succumbed to his injuries on the 6th. The first man from Decatur County to fall in the war, the American Legion Post at Greensburg is named in his honour. Burial location (USA) unknown.
