17 May Mus Clifford Henry Barker

An employee of CE Atkins Co, Indianapolis, Clifford was born on October 14th 1894 at Clayton, Hendricks County. He was drafted into the army on 18 April 1918 and, after basic training at Camp Taylor, was assigned, as a musician, to the 304th Engineers at Camp Mills, New York. He was sent overseas on  8 September 1918 and was severely gassed during combats in the Argonne forest during the closing weeks of the war.

After returning to the USA, he was discharged in May 1919, but was still suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. He died of this on 17 May 1920 and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Indianapolis, leaving his only son an orphan.
