20 May 1916 Pte Douglas Norman Moir

From Aberdeen, Scotland, Douglas was born on 10 February 1894 and had seen previous service with the 5th Royal Highlanders. A Bank Clerk upon emigration to Canada, he was, at the time of his enlistment, living in Vancouver which is also where he enlisted on 4 December 1914. His unit was stationed at ‘Halfway House' near Zillebeke on 20 May 1916 when Douglas, who was employed as a runner, was killed by a stray bullet near Sanctuary Wood at 1am. Though buried, his grave was later lost and he is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
