A painter from Bloomington, Ernest was born on 28 November 1895. He served in the US Regular Army between 1912 and 1915 (Lafayette) and re-enlisted on 22 June 1915, training at San Antonio, Texas and Syracuse, NY. After being sent overseas in September 1917 he was assigned to Co A and the MG Coy of the 9th Infantry Regiment (2nd Div). He was killed at Belleau Wood on 10 June 1918 and had received the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star amongst other gallantry citations. Ernest's body was repatriated post-war.
