5173 Pte James Entwistle, 1st Bn.East Lancashire Regiment.
From Burnley, Lancs, James was a reservist who had originally enlisted into the 2nd Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment in 1896. At the time of his re-mobilisation in August 1914, he was living on Healeywood Road in Burnley and was soon sent to the 1st Battalion in France, arriving in October 1914.
At the time of his death, James was serving in the trenches on the Yser Canal north of Ypres (vicinity of 'Fortin Dix-Sept') and was one of 11 men killed by shellfire on 26 June 1915 - a day described in the battalion War diary as simply...'a hard day in the trenches'. He is now buried at Talana Farm Cemetery, Boesinghe.
