Sgt Martin Vorbuchner, 1 Komp, Kgl Bayer, 16 Infanterie-Regiment Großherzog Ferdinand von Toskana.
From Halsbach, 33 year old Sgt Vorbuchner was a landscape gardener by trade but had served since before the beginning of the war. A holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class (and nine year service medal) he had served in most sectors of France (Somme, Artois, Verdun, Champagne, Argonne, Lorraine, Aisne) since his arrival on the Western Front in August 1914.
He was badly wounded in the vicinity of Souain and died in a field hospital at Brenelle on 22 July 1918. Although buried in a nearby military cemetery, the graves of this hospital could not be individually identified post-war and so, today, Martin lies buried as an ‘unknown' in the mass grave of the French Cemetery of Vauxbuin.
