From Breitlach, Bavaria, 21-year-old Johann had served on the Western Front since February 1916 (after spending a year on the Eastern front). After taking part in the Battle of Verdun, he was sent back to the East to help stem the Brusilov Offensive and take part in the Battle of Kovel before taking over a sector of the Rumanian Front.

Back in France in January 1917, he served in Alsace and then in the Laon sector where he was killed by counter-battery fire on 24 July 1917. Johann is now buried in the Soldatenfriedhof at Sissonne (block 5, grave 852).
