30 July 1916 Sdt Josef Hensteiger

From Hof, Bavaria, Josef had served at the front since February 1915 and had fought in the Vosges before being sent to Galicia where he took part in the Battle of Przemsl on 3 June 1915. Returning to the Vosges in July as part of the 3rd Company, he remained here until 10 July 1916 when, after entraining at Colmar, he arrived on the Somme around Peronne. After being engaged in heavy fighting around Maurepas and Guillemont, Josef was one of many men of his unit killed in action on 30 July whilst defending their positions in this region. He was 25 years of age and has no known grave.
