13 August 1918 Pvt Silas Fred Shaffer

Born 6 May 1896, Silas was a farmer from Clarkesville. He had twice tried to enlist in the US Army but was rejected both times because of physical disability. He was eventually accepted at his third attempt in early August 1918 but contracted pneumonia while under training at Camp Sherman and died there on 13 August. He is buried in Salem Cemetery ,Tippecanoe Cty.
