Born 6 December 1896 at Waco, Mo, Vernon moved with his parents to Yorktown, Delware Co in 1902 where he gained employment as an electrician. After several failed attempts to join the US Army, he travelled to Canada and enlisted in the Canadian Flying Corps in September 1917. He was sent to England (East Boldre, Hampshire) in early 1918. On 30 August 1918, whilst teaching a recruit how to pilot his machine, the plane crashed and Vernon was killed. He was buried at East Boldre (St.Paul's) churchyard where he still remains.
