Unteroffizier Georg Purzeller, 7 Komp, Kgl Bayerisches Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr 1 (1 BRIB, 1 Bav Rez.Div).
From Holzhaufen, 28 year old Georg had served on the Western Front since August 1914. Taking part in many engagements (Battle of the Frontiers and then Artois until August 1916 when he was moved to the Somme front), one of which had resulted in his being awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class. At the end of August 1916, whilst his unit was resting near Cambrai, Georg was one of the many of his comrades who had opted to return to the front in order to facilitate the relief of some of the worn-out combat troops in the Martinpuich and Clery sectors. He was to fall in action near Clery on 1 September and is now buried in the Kameradengrab of the German Military Cemetery at Rancourt.
