Transferring to the 7th Bn East Lancs, he was sent to Belgium where he saw action in the Battle of Messines before he was to be killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres (commonly known as Passchendaele) in the vicinity of Hessian Wood. He was one of six men of the battalion to be killed that day. He is now buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
