13623 Pte James Calverley, 3rd Bn Coldstream Guards.
Born in Burnley in 1887, James , who was living at the time at number 12 Clock Street, Burnley, enlisted into the Coldstream Guards in November 1914 and proceeded to France on 11 June 1915. Serving mainly in the Vermelles area, he was killed in action whilst in the line just north of the Vermelles-Hulluch road on 8 October 1915 during a day noted for heavy bombardments followed by a German attack consisting of three battalions. This attack was successfully repulsed, but cost the lives of 22 guardsmen including James who was posted as ‘missing' in this action. His body was never successfully identified and he is now commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
