4962 Sdt (Brancardier) Gabriel Armand Pierre Gregoire, 9e Cie, 64e RI.
Born at Mouilleron en Pareds (Vendée) on 17th February 1889, Gabriel was a farmer in civil life. An active army reservist in 1914, he was recalled to service on 3 August 1914 and he became a stretcher-bearer in the 64th Infantry Regiment (21st Division). Gabriel saw service at the Marne, Somme (1914-15 including the Battle of Serre-Hebuterne) and the 2nd Battle of the Champagne before moving to the Verdun front in 1916.
On 22 November, during preparations for an offensive in the vicinity of Douaumont Fort and village, Gabriel was killed by machine gun fire whilst retrieving the wounded from no-man's land. He is now buried in the Necropole Nationale of Douaumont (grave 8724).
