45025 L/Cpl Herbert St Clair Marlatt MM, 7th Field Coy,Canadian Engineers.
Born at Fort William, Ontario on 12 March 1893, Herbert - a trainee Mining Engineer - enlisted at Valcartier, Quebec on 23 September 1914. He went overseas with the first Canadian contingent as part of the 3rd Field Coy, Canadian Engineers and was wounded in action in May 1915, only returning to the front again in early 1916, this time to the 7th Field Coy. Herbert was awarded the Military Medal for actions at Courcelette on 18 and 20 September 1916 when, following the wounding of his section Sergeant, he used his initiative and took charge of a large working party constructing advanced jump of trenches some 250 yds to the front of the British line.
He was wounded again on 7 October 1916 and, although hopes were high for his full recovery, he died of these injuries in Newcastle War Hospital, Staffordshire, UK on 3 December 1916. Herbert is still buried in the town cemetery at Newcastle under Lyme.
