A miller from Bärnmühle, Bavaria, Johann was a 36 year old Ersatz Reservist who was recalled to full service in early August 1914. He saw action in the Vosges and the Breche Valley in 1914, and he spent most of 1915 on the Woevre east of St Mihiel (specifically Apremont/Spada) where his divisional commander (Gen von Benzino) was killed in action. Johann was killed on 10 December 1915 whilst serving in the Vosges and now lies buried in the German section of the French military cemetery at Bertrimoutier.
