226535 Pte Hugh Calvert, 18th Bn CEF.
Born in Gananoque, Ontario on 15 February 1895, Hugh was a machinist by trade who enlisted into the CEF on 5 October 1915. Travelling to France on 10 October 1916, he was firstly engaged in the very last actions of the Somme 1916 battles before moving north to the vicinity of Vimy Ridge where the winter was spent in patrol activities. On 3 January 1917, Hugh's battalion was in the Calonne II sector engaged in the relief of the 20th Bn in the nearby Maroc sector when he was killed. Hugh is now buried in Maroc British Cemetery.
