14474 A/Cpl George Naylor, 8th Bn Duke of Wellington's (W Riding) Regt.
Born at Gargrave near Skipton, in 1889, George had enlisted at Keighley in (approx) October 1914 into the West Riding Regiment. Allotted to the 8th Battalion , he left the UK on 3 July 1915 and arrived on Lemnos on the tenth of the month, destined for Gallipoli. After taking part in the landings at Suvla on 6 and 7 August 1915, George was located in the vicinity of Jephson's Post and Karakol Dagh for much of his service on the peninsular up to the evacuation from Suvla on 19 December. Soon after evacuation to Imbros, George fell ill (dysentery) and died in hospital on Imbros on 7 January 1916. His body was returned to the peninsular, however, as he is now buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery in a plot that consists entirely of men brought in from the Aegean islands after the war.
