8 January 1919 Lt Carl J Shipe

8 January 1919 Lt Carl J Shipe2nd Lt Carl J Shipe, Transportation Corps Coy, 328th Infantry, US Army.

Born 24 July 1893 at Fort Wayne, Indiana, Carl moved to Indianapolis in 1903 and was a graduate of Purdue University. After enlisting into the 1st Officers TC at Ft Benjamin Harrison in May 1917, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served at Camp Taylor, Washington, at Camp Wadsworth and at Camp Colt before being sent overseas on 30 August 1918 where he was assigned to Co B of the 328th Infantry Regiment with which he took part in the battles at St Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. After the Armistice, the time was spent in training establishments around Prauthoy (Haute Marne) where Carl contracted the spinal meningitis that was later to kill him on 8 January 1919. Initially buried in ‘Haute Marne' American Cemetery (grave number 48), Carl's body was later transferred to St Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt where he still lies (Plot B, Row 11, Grave 24).
