11 January 1918 Spr William Gordon Haggas

11 January 1918 Spr William Gordon Haggas213580 Spr William Gordon Haggas, TC Royal Engineers, Newark.

Born in Sutton-in-Craven in 1890, William and his family had emigrated to the USA (New York State) pre-war, William returning to the UK in October 1916 in order to enlist. He joined the Royal Engineers and, after only a short time in France, suffered a serious strain whilst manoeuvring heavy items. Returning to the UK suffering from an internal haemorrhage, he was admitted to Newark Military Hospital where he died soon afterwards. William is now buried in Sutton-in-Craven Baptist Burial Ground.
