Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 11 February 1887, Robert had seen prior service for three years as part of the Royal Scots Fusiliers before emigrating to Ontario where he gained employment as a general labourer. He enlisted into the CEF at Valcartier on 22 September 1914 and was soon sent to England to continue his training before being shipped to France. Unfortunately, Robert didn't make it to France as, whilst located at Salisbury camp, he fell victim to exposure and was admitted to Netheravon hospital where, on 16 January 1915, he died of heart failure. Robert is now buried in Netheravon (All Saints) Churchyard, Wiltshire.
