G3177 Staff Sergeant Major George Brown, CASC.
Born in London on 1 June 1878, George had seen seven years service in the 19th Hussars before emigrating to Canada (where he was to serve for a further three years in the Canadian Army Service Corps before taking up his civilian occupation of baker). He enlisted into the CEF on 21 June 1915 and was soon at Shornecliffe, England where, due to his past experience, he was soon promoted to Sergeant and then WO1 after arriving in France in March 1916. In December 1916, George fell ill and was evacuated back to the UK, where he died, in Keighley War Hospital, on 18 January 1917. He is buried in Keighley (Morton) Cemetery, Yorkshire where he is commemorated on a special memorial (the CWGC have George's initials as being ‘W C I' but none of these show up on any Canadian paperwork).
