23 January 1916 Inf Franz Xavier Matzinger

23_january_1916_inf_franz_xavier_matzingerInf Franz Xavier Matzinger, Kgl Bay 15 Inf-Regt ‘König Friedrich August von Sachsen'.

A farmer from Siglöd, Franz had served in France since 1914. partaking in the Battle of the Frontiers, he had manned the trenches of the Somme and in Flanders before arriving in Artois where he was to die: killed by a shell splinter to the head near Thelus (near Arras) on 23 January 1916. He is now buried in the Kameradengrab at the German military cemetery at St Laurent-Blangy.
