A businessman from Unterammergau, Michael was born on 21 July 1895 and was an already serving soldier at the outbreak of war. Seeing action during the Battle of the Frontiers and the ‘Race to the Sea' in 1914, he spent much of 1915 on the Somme front moving, in October, to Artois and Flanders where he saw a lot of action in the Neuville-Souchez sector. Michael was killed in action on 1 February 1916 whilst manning the trenches near Bailleul-Sire-Berthoult and now lies buried in the German military cemetery at Neuville-St Vaast (Block 11, grave 946).
