Pvt Alonzo Joseph Smith, USMC.
Born 4 October 1890 in Harrison County, Indiana, Alonzo had initially joined the army in 1907 at Louisville, Kentucky. After being honourably discharged, he became a farmer in Crawford County before re-enlisting for war service in July 1917. Soon after enlistment, Alonzo was transferred to the US Marine Corps with whom, as part of the first contingent, he served in France, being wounded four times. After being invalided back to the USA, he died of pneumonia at Camp Mead shipyard on 7 February 1920 - the same day he was due to receive his discharge from the military. Alonzo is buried in Milltown, Indiana.
