12 February 1917 Pte George Scorah Bellas

Originally from Skipton, Yorkshire, George was living in Settle at the time of his enlisment in November 1915 and working as an employee of the American Oil Company. He joined his battalion in France in July 1916 and fought on the Somme, where he was wounded in the arm at Spectrum Trench during the attack at Lesboeufs on 12 October 1916. Geroge returned to the front after a few weeks of hospital treatment. He was killed in action on 12 February 1917, at the age of 24, leaving a widow and two young children, the youngest of which he had never seen. George has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
