19 February 1918 Pte John William Smith

A warp-dresser from Cowling, John enlisted at Keighley into the Northumberland Fusiliers on 10 July 1916. Transferred to the MGC, he arrived in France on 7 November 1916 but, after suffering from gas poisoning, he was back in the UK just over a year later (10 November 1917). Treated at Lilley Lane Military Hospital, Mostyn and the Cheshire Military Hospital in Knutsford, he was transferred in January 1918 to Alma Park Military Hospital, Levenshulme, Manchester where he died of pneumonia on 19 February 1918. He was 20 years of age and is now buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Cowling.
