2185 Pte Charles Luther Gordon, 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders.
From Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire, Charles was employed as a winding master at Madder Clough Mill prior to his enlistment, in August 1914, into the Gordon Highlanders. Embarking in France in May 1915, he was involved in the actions at Hooge in the summer of 1915 and was wounded in the hand and arm during the Loos subsidiary action at Bellewaerde in September 1915. After recovering from his wounds at Marlpit Court Hospital, Endbridge, Kent, Charles returned to the front line at the beginning of 1916 and was involved in the actions to re-take ‘the Bluff' on the Ypres-Comines canal on 2 March 1916. The 1st Gordons suffered some 245 casualties during this attack, one of whom was Charles. His body never being recovered, Charles is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial at Ypres. He was 21 years of age.
