Having served on the Somme front at the latter end of 1914 and near Arras throughout 1915 (moving slightly southwards at the beginning of 1916), 20 year old Franz was severely wounded by shellfire at the beginning of March 1916. He was transferred to a field hospital at Villers-Carbonel where he died on 5 March. A recipient of the Bavarian Militär-Verdienstorden, Franz was buried nearby but, post-war, his remains were transferred to the Kameradengrab at the German military cemetery of Rancourt.
