From Gent, Monroe Cty, USA, Thomas was born on 11 May 1896 and was employed as a furniture factory employee. He enlisted into the US Army on 2 May 1917 at Indianapolis and received his training at Jefferson Barracks, Ohio. An early member of the AEF to serve overseas, he arrived in France in July 1917 and saw action during a year's front-line service. He died of lobar pneumonia on 9 March 1919 at Base Hospital Nr 114 at Bordeaux and was initially buried in the American Cemetery at Merignac in the Gironde (grave Nr.230). He is now buried in the ABMC cemetery at Suresnes near Paris (Plot A, Row 11, Grave 9).
