17 March 1918 Gefr Mathias Klauser

17 March 1918 Gefr Mathias KlauserGefr Mathias Klauser, (unit nomenclature unknown) Res Feld Art Regt.

Serving at the front since September 1914, 35 year old Mathias was a holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Military Merit Cross. He was wounded by shellfire in early March 1918 whilst serving in the Lens sector and was moved to a field hospital near Carvin. On 17 March 1918, however, Allied planes bombed Carvin and the hospital was hit, killing several patients including Mathias. He is now buried in the German military cemetery at Carvin (block 3, grave 1757).
