Gefr Konrad Maier, 3 MG Komp, Kgl Bay 1 Inf-Regt ‘König'.
A holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class and Military Merit Cross 3rd Class, Konrad was a tenant farmer from Königsweiss in Bavaria in his civilian life. Seeing frontline service from 1915, Konrad had participated in actions on the British-held section of the Western Front until moving to the Battle of Verdun. Following action at Verdun, a spell was spent fighting in the later stages of the Somme battle before settling into routine sector holding duties for the following year. Konrad was killed in action at the age of 23 on the first day of the ‘Kaiserschlacht' offensive whilst in combat with the 8th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps near Itancourt to the south of St Quentin. He is now buried in the Kameradengrab of the German Military Cemetery at Itancourt.
