Capt John Edward Marshall, 1st Bn Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
Born at Coveney Rectory (Isle of Ely) on 3 June 1881, John was educated at Llandaff Cathedral School and Repton. He joined the 4th (Militia) Bn, Suffolk Regiment in 1900 and became a Lieutenant in this unit in 1901. A participant in the Boer War, John was present at the Orange River Colony and Cape Colony and received the QSA with three clasps. In January 1903, he was commissioned into the regular army, accepting a commission into the Royal Garrison Artillery before being granted his Lieutenancy in the DCLI in October 1906. From 1908 to 1913, he was seconded to the West African Regiment and served there until April 1913.
Awarded his Captaincy at the end of August 1914, John was posted to France and Flanders in December 1914. He was killed in action during routine duties near Kemmel on 30 March 1915. John is now buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
