49222 Pte William Charles, 18th Bn Kings (Liverpool) Regt.
A market stall tripe-dresser from Burnley, Lancs (77 Westgate), 41 year old William enlisted into the army in the latter half of 1915. He served in France and Flanders from April 1916, and he saw action at the Battles of the Somme, Arras and Third Ypres before being wounded by shell splinters in the thigh on 21 March 1918 near St.Quentin and posted as ‘missing'. He had, however, been picked up by the advancing German medical units and sent to their rear for treatment. William died in a German military hospital some 30 miles to the east of Cambrai of his wounds on 21 April 1918 and he is now buried in Avesnes Sur Helpe Communal Cemetery.
