9990 Pte Leslie Hugh Carter, 3rd Bn CEF.
Born in Brighton, England on 26 August 1886, Leslie had seen four years military service in the 2nd Bn East Surrey Regiment before emigrating to Toronto where he was employed as a chauffeur. He had also served in his local militia regiment in Canada for two years prior to his enlistment into the 3rd Bn CEF at Valcartier on 22 September 1914. Arriving in England (for training on Salisbury Plain) on 16 October 1914, he was sent to France in February 1915. After a period in the trenches near Fleurbaix, Leslie moved into the Ypres Salient in early April where he was to be killed in action near Langemark during the Second Battle of Ypres. Although he was reportedly buried on the battlefield, Leslie's grave was lost and he is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
