An accountant from Nösling, Bavaria, Josef was 44 years of age when he died. He enlisted in August 1914, and he saw front-line service from October of that year. Josef was killed in action on the Aisne front during a French counter-battery bombardment and is now buried in Laon's ‘Bousson' cemetery (Block 5, grave 5).
